For this lesson, the teacher showed historical examples of scratch art, and invited students to practice on the store bought scratch art paper. On a separate paper, students heavily colored a design with crayons, then covered the composition with black tempera and dish soap mix. After drying, a new composition was scratched out of the black and revealed the crayon below. 
After students practiced twice, as described above, an challenge extension would be to try an animal face scratch composition.
